  Defence Services


The main purpose of having an army is to defend the geographical parameters of the country from bordering enemy countries or distant invaders. The same army can be used to take over the territory of the enemy country. Hence the army is trained both for offence and defence. Army also comes to civilian aid during various types of natural disasters like floods, earth quakes, tsunami waves, counter terrorism, Civil riots and insurgencies etc.

Ranks of The Officers of All the Three Services : Following are the ranks of the officers of all the three wings of the defence forces :

Entry Programme : The main entry pogrammes to all the three services are as under :

  • National Defence Academy & Naval Academy : As an officer in the Military, you will be heir to a glorious heritage. You will be a part of the world's finest fighting forces – latest in technology, training techniques and strategic doctrines.
    • Written Exam : The NDA Entrance exam will be held by UPSC in February & September for entry to Army, Navy and Air Force Wings of the NDA.
    • Eligibility : Age, Sex and Martial Status – Only unmarried male candidates between age group of 16-18 are eligible to take the examination
    • Educational Qualification : The educational qualification for the 3 wings of the National Defence Academy & Naval Academy are as follows :
    • Army Wing : Passed class 12th of the 10+2 pattern or equivalent with Maths
    • Air Force & Naval Wing : Passed class 12th of the 10+2 pattern or equivalent with Maths & Physics

      Notification : April / May – October / November
    • Exam : February / March – September / October
    • Test Details : The written test comprises of these subjects :

  • Combined Defence Services : UPSC conducts an entrance examination for entry into the officer cadre of Army, Air Force and Navy. Candidates having qualified is written examination have to appear before a Service Selection Board (SSB) for Interview.

      IMA Unmarried Candidate (18-23 Yrs.)
      NA Unmarried Candidate (18-22 Yrs.)
      AFA Unmarried Candidate (18-21 Yrs.)
      OTA Married / Unmarried Candidate (18-24 Yrs.)

      IMA & OTA Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
      NA BE / B.Sc. With Phy. & Maths
      AFA Bachelor's Degree or equivalent with Physics & or Maths as compulsory subjects.

      Conditions of Eligibility :

    • A citizen of India
    • A subject of Bhutan
    • A subject of Nepal
    • A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
    • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka & East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

  • ENTRY FOR WOMEN IN THE ARMY/NAVY/AIR FORCE (SSC)
    The 3 services have been recruiting women candidates for some select branches for short service commission which is of 5 to 10 years duration.

Physical Standards :

Height and Weight :
The minimum acceptable height and weight for women is 152 cm and 42 kg respectively.

Vision : Visual acuity (min) Distant Vision (corrected) Better eye 6/6 worse eye 6/18, Myopia of not more than minus 5.5 D including astigmatism. Candidates who have undergone Radial Keratotomy or Lasik Surgery are not acceptable. To be passed as fit, a candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disability likely to interfere with the efficient performance of duty.

Training :
Approximately a 6 months training at OTA, Chennai is given after successful completion of which candidates are granted commission in the rank of Lt. The final allocation of Arms/services is made before the candidates pass out of OTA. 2 years candidate is granted for engineering graduates.

Vision : 6/36, 6/10 correctable to 6/6 in each eye with glass.

Training : Candidates recommended by Naval Headquarters after short listing are required to appear before the Naval Selection Board (at Bangalore and Bhopal) undergo tests in leadership qualities and physical fitness. Initially training is conducted at NAVAC situated in Goa and others centres like Mumbai, Cochin, Visakhapatnam.
